Attention Hawkhead Parrot Owners & Veterinarians!
Please participate in a simple study that is intended to look
for Hawkhead Parrot weight averages.
Please email me at
lisawhite@alaska.com with the name, age, gender, weight and diet of your Hawkhead.
Past and future ages/weights of your bird would help in the study as
well. Weight is taken by grams.
We do recognize there may be slight or significant weight
differences/variances due to:
Parentage, age, diet, weaning, health, increased activity as
chicks become more balanced and agile, or simply a wing trim as time
goes by.
Listing the foods your bird eats will also be beneficial to the
study.

Pictured below: HawkEye's trip to the Vet in February
2008.

Pictured below: The reason HawkEye went to the Vet...

Despite the fact I could not bend the wire mesh ladder of the nest box with my
fingers, that did not matter to the curiosity and strong mandibles of my
Hawkheads.
I did not look inside the nest box and find what they had done
until HawkEye appeared sick one morning and he crawled back into the nest box.
I found the floor of the nest box was littered with small pieces
of the wire mesh. They had literally chewed apart the bottom half of the
wire mesh ladder in the nest box.
HawkEye was rushed to the Vet and x-rayed. He was also
tested for zinc poisoning.
Fortunately, no metal pieces were in his digestive system and
there was only a slight increase in his zinc level. The Vet bill after
three visits was over $ 300.
Needless to say, new nest boxes for my birds were ordered
without the wire mesh ladders.
